HELLO......I USED TO HAVE A LILLSTINA WHICH I HAD PURCHASED USED WAY BACK IN THE LATE 1960'S EARLY 1970'S....I ALWAYS STRING MY SHAFTS OR HARNESSES TO THE TREADLES WITH THE 1ST TREADLE HAVING SHAFT 1 AND 3 AND THE 6TH TREADLE HAVING SHAFT 2 AND 4......ALTERNATE THESE AS YOU WEAVE AND YOU HAVE PLAIN WEAVE.......
FOR TREADLE 2-SHAFT 1 AND 2,
FOR TREADLE 3-SHAFT 2 AND 3,
FOR TREADLE 4-SHAFT 3 AND 4,
FOR TREADLE 5-SHAFT 4 AND 1,

WEAVE EACH ONE OF THESE AGAIN AND AGAIN WITH A NORMAL THREADING AND YOU'LL HAVE AN ORDINARY STRAIGHT TWILL....

AS FAR AS THE LILLSTINA IS CONCERNED.....THE SWIVELING BEATER WAS WONDERFUL....BUT THE METHOD OF WARPING FROM THE UPPER STEEL BEAM DOWN TO THE FLOOR AND OVER ANOTHER STEEL BEAM AND THEN UP TO A WOODEN BEAM AND THEN THROUGH THE HEDDLES MADE ME INSANE....I TRIED EVERYTHING I COULD THINK OF AND EVERYTHING DIDN'T WORK AND THE HEAVY LINEN BEAM LINES SNAPPED....THE SOLUTION....IS TO FIND A CARPENTER OR A WOODWORK AND MAKE 2 PIECES OF WOOD FOR EACH STEEL BEAM AND SCREW THEM IN PLACE SO THEY WILL NOT MOVE.....ATTACH YOUR WARP TO THE NEW WOOD BEAM...MAYBE WITH A BEAM CLOTH....I SOLD MY LILLSTINA AND BOUGHT A TOIKA....WHICH WAS A MISTAKE.....I NOW HAVE A BABY WOLF.....

You mentioned requests for pictures of the Lillistina. Would that be possible. I am trying to put one back together again. I have the handbook (such as it is), but am having trouble with the treadle stringing. And, I have only ben able to find a very few people who have Lillistina looms.

When I used a loom with a fixed center (Leclerc looms) I popped the center S hook attaching wires out of the shafts while I threaded, this allowed me to thread from right to left without worrying about the heddles, the shafts were a bit springy, but not enough to cause problems. If there were a bunch of heddles left on the left side of the loom I tightly tied them to the shaft's sides. Then I just popped the S hooks back in place on the shafts and it was done. Another great solution to having too many heddles left in the middle is to add and empty heddle to each shaft at each pattern repeat, this means if you do misthread you have heddles ready to be threaded every pattern repeat.

I count the heddles from the center and move the extras out of the way to the sides. That gives me the same number of heddles on each side of the shaft so the weight is evenly distributed. Let's say I need 50 heddles for shaft 1. I count 25 from the center, then put the remainder way off to the side. I then thread from one side to the other, starting at the edge, not the center. If I miscount, I'm usually only off by one or two on one side, which I can pull one from the extras. I can't remember which loom you have but on all the ones I've had, I've been able to unhook the heddle bar and slide them to the other side of the center point if I had to.

Hi there,
Regarding your crackle weave study group. If you go onto Handweaving.net and look at the book Crackle Weaves, Ralph E. Griswold, 2004 Ralph E. Griswold, there are about 800 crackle patterns for you and most of them are for 4 shafts. The Griswald crackles are not true crackles in that there are no alternate tabby picks, so they are one shuttle weaves that go very quickly.

I guess I could overdye it and then give it to someone else. My friend Melissa did choose something else, in the crackle weave that I showed her - so that is what I'm gonna do for her.

I worked for Icelandair for 14 years in Columbia, MD, before they decided to move to office up to Boston. Needless to say, I decided to take my chances and stay here.

Wow, fantastic job with the butter! One day, while surfing the net, I came across the instructions for this process, shared it with a friend, made plans to actually try it, and that's as far as I got. Glad to see it really works.
